“Mujong” is a famous Korean novel written by “Yi Gwang-su”. As the author's first full-length novel, it was serialized in Maeil Shinbo from January 1 to June 14, 1917, 126 times, and published as a book at Gwangik Seogwan in 1918. Its translated title is “Heartless” and this novel heightens the author’s reputation. The main characters are Hyungsik, Sunhyung, Youngchae, and Byongok. This novel has a theme of free love, promotion of national consciousness, and the sublimation into enlightened nationalism for secular love. It breaks away from the structure of poetic justice and depicts the psychology of a character rather than being plot-centric. Its significance is that the novel shows the inspiring love for the nation, claiming anti-feudal free love, humanitarian idealism (science, education). It shows the combination of Enlightenment and nationalism through Hyungsik's change in his role. Lee Hyung-sik is moving from his role of a lover who feels affection for Young-chae and Seon-young to the position of a teacher who helps Young-chae and Seon-young realize what they must do to save the nation. Thus, he encourages Young-chae, Seon-yeong, Hyeong-sik, and Byung-wook to enlighten the ignorant people through education, giving the impression of a strong sense of unity. Given these significance, it also has a limitation of making the ordinary people as passive and ignorant individuals.
