다이아나 아부-자베르는 뉴욕 시러큐스에서 태어났다. 다이아나의 아버지는 요르단 사람이었고 할머니는 팔레스타인 예루살렘 사람이었다. 다이아나의 어머니는 아일랜드와 독일의 후손인 미국인이었다. 7살 때, 다이아나는 가족과 함께 2년 동안 요르단으로 이사했다. 다이아나는 State University of New York at Oswego (대학교)에서 영어와 창조적 글쓰기 학사 학위를 받았고, University of Windsor에서 영어와 창조적 글쓰기 석사 학위를, BinghamtonUniversity에서 영어와 창조적 글쓰기 박사 학위를 받았다.
